Mombasa
Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya, is located on the southeast coast of the Indian Ocean.
As the most important transshipment port in East Africa, it can cover Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, drcongo and South Sudan.
Transhipment customs clearance
When it comes to transnational transshipment, different countries have different requirements for transshipment and customs clearance, which may need to be cleared only once, twice or even three times. Even transshipment to the same country, but different regions, there will be different customs clearance provisions.
Uganda: there are different customs clearance requirements according to the final destination.
1) The goods must be cleared in Uganda before leaving Mombasa.
2) The goods are cleared once in Mombasa and again at the border.
3) The goods are cleared once in Mombasa and again in Kampala.
Tanzania: there are different customs clearance requirements according to the final destination.
1) Goods must be cleared in Tanzania before leaving Mombasa.
2) The goods are cleared once in Mombasa and again in Tanzania.
Rwanda: goods must be cleared in Rwanda before leaving Mombasa.
South Sudan: most of the South Sudan’s goods, from Mombasa through Uganda to South Sudan, need to be cleared for many times.
Customs clearance documents:
Bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, all documents must be provided at least 7 days in advance before the goods arrive in Mombasa.
B / L requirements:
The bill of lading must show the actual consignee and the final destination must show the actual country.
Customs only accept shipping company bill of lading, not any forwarder bill of lading.
The original shipping company bill of lading or telex release is OK.
Key points of transshipment:
Weight: regardless of container type, the weight with skin should not exceed 27 tons. For 20 ‘containers with less than 13 tons, double backs can be arranged to enjoy lower transfer charges.
Waiting time: when it comes to border clearance, there is 48 hours of free waiting time for customs clearance. After 48 hours, there will be a waiting time fee every 12 hours.
Free time: apply for free time of at least 30 days. Transhipment of goods involves international transit customs clearance and return of empty containers. The longer the free time, the more additional costs can be avoided to the greatest extent.
